# Peeling Back the Skin, Destroying the World — Rebecca Saunders and Die Antwoord

A rap group from South Africa.

Their unique culture, “ZEF,” where madness and humor collide, explodes with full force. Their world is saturated with the vibes of BALSE — collapse and chaos.

### The Crisis of Mastermind “NINJA”

NINJA, the organization’s rapper, has poured his entire fortune into his beloved “ZEF TAXI,” a heavily modified car. His wife and co-ruler, ¥O-LANDI VI$$ER, has threatened to leave the organization unless he gets his “shit together” soon.

His complete inability to stand up to the woman who actually holds the power recalls the power dynamics of Dora and her family of sky pirates.

### The Mysterious Classified Code “THE ANGEL”

Deep within their database (LORE) lies an entry called “THE ANGEL,” locked under the ominous classification:

**CLASSIFIED // AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY**

### The Global “ZAMA ZAMA” Operation

Armed with their new song, *ZAMA ZAMA*, they are calling on their followers to join a plan for 2027: simultaneously hacking — or launching live attacks on — major festivals around the world, from Japan’s Fuji Rock and Summer Sonic to America’s Coachella.

**BOOK DIE ANTWOORD 2027**

The crude yet devastating low-end frequencies they unleash may accelerate the speed at which the world collapses.

---

South Africa’s ultimate agents of chaos, **Die Antwoord**, and **Rebecca Saunders**, who explores the abyss of contemporary music.

At first glance, they seem to belong to completely different worlds. Yet they trace a beautiful symmetry: both BALSE — destroy — established beauty and harmony, exposing raw, naked life energy underneath.

# Contemporary Composer Rebecca Saunders

Born in 1967\. Winner of the Golden Lion for Music at the Venice Biennale.

### Chapter 1: Abandoning Expression — Toward “Sound That Exists in Itself”

Saunders strips away the clothing of conventional, beautiful melody, exploring timbre, noise, silence, and the energy itself at the very moment sound comes into being.

It is a process comparable to the moment one becomes convinced of the levitation stone's pure power.

### Chapter 2: Peeling Back the Skin, Tearing Through the Surface of Silence — *Scar*

The performance of *Scar*, the second work, is the world itself at the moment BALSE is unleashed — tearing through the surface of silence and falling into the underworld.

By eliminating unison and shifting overtones out of alignment, Saunders allows the space to be dominated by “scars of sound.”

### Chapter 3: At the End of Collapse, the Ghost of Silence Remaining Within — *Skull*

The third work, *Skull*, quotes from a novel by Haruki Murakami and pursues a silence that remains like a phantom after the wound.

As instruments, including the electronic organ, dominate the space, she finally rediscovers, deep within her own music, a “core of melody.”

### Conclusion: Rediscovering the “Core” Beyond Collapse

Just as BALSE is a ritual that tears through the surface of an empire and exposes its true core, Saunders’s exploration also discovers a new core at the end of destruction.

This extreme edge of contemporary music is an acoustic apparatus depicting a world's collapse and rebirth.

# Two Forms of Collapse

### Saunders Peels the Skin of Sound; Die Antwoord Peels Away False Decency

Saunders treats conventional beautiful melody as a “surface layer,” tearing it apart to expose the raw noise — the scars — buried inside sound.

Die Antwoord, meanwhile, tears through the skin of the “polite correctness” imposed by the world, giving it the middle finger as they expose the naked wildness of the bottom — ZEF.

**“Destroy the beautiful fake. Expose the ugly real.”**

### The Abyss of Silence vs. the Madness of Noise

For Saunders, silence is a canvas on which the weight of sound leaves its traces.

Her music is unafraid of the eerie silence that remains after collapse.

Die Antwoord, meanwhile, are on the verge of destroying their own household after pouring their entire fortune into a modified car, yet they still attempt to fill the world with noise that shakes the brain.

If the former is **“the silence at the end of the world,”** the latter is **“the riotous party as the world comes to an end.”**

One strips away the skin of sound and approaches the silence of the skeleton; the other pours its entire fortune into a taxi and races headlong toward destruction.

The highest art — Saunders.

The lowest depths of madness — Die Antwoord.

---

The connection between Rebecca Saunders’s masterpiece *Skull* and Haruki Murakami’s *Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World* lies in a mystery:

At the extreme edge of contemporary music and in one of Japan’s most representative works of literature, both are staring at exactly the same landscape — **the silence at the deepest level of consciousness.**

# 【CLASSIFIED FILE】 CODE NAME: SKULL — The Eerie Silence Emitted by a Unicorn’s Skull

In composing *Skull*, Saunders directly quotes the following passage from *Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World*, using it as the starting point for her inspiration:

> “The skull is surrounded by a deep silence, like nothingness itself. The silence does not remain on the surface; it lingers inside, like smoke.”

### Mystery No. 1: What Are the “Skull” and “Silence” in the Novel?

In Haruki Murakami’s novel, the protagonist lives in a city surrounded by high walls — the End of the World — where he is ordered to perform a job known as “dreamreading,” deciphering the lost memories and hearts of people through the skulls of unicorns.

The people of this city have no “shadows” — no ego or emotions. The silence residing within the skull signifies the **“absolute nothingness”** at the bottom of consciousness, where all emotion and inner conflict have been stripped away.

### Mystery No. 2: How Did Saunders Turn “Silence Like Smoke” into Music?

Saunders takes this image of “silence lingering inside like smoke” as the starting point for the music of *Skull* itself.

There is no piano in *Skull*. What we encounter is not a simple translation of the silence left inside a skull directly into sound. Instead, the music explores the sensation that something remains within, through the process by which sounds emerge, overlap, and disappear.

When I actually heard *Skull* at the Dimenna Center, I did not clearly hear anything that sounded like “smoke.”

What matters, rather, is not reproducing smoke itself as sound. Using Murakami’s image of the skull as a clue, the music searches for what remains beyond the surface — what exists even deeper inside.

### Mystery No. 3: Why Did the “Core of Melody” Appear at the End?

In the previous works of the triptych, *Skin* and *Scar*, she relentlessly stripped away conventional melody and musical expression, pursuing noise, pain, and the energy of sound itself, as if peeling away the skin.

But when she reached *Skull*, the deepest point of the triptych, there was nothing left to strip away.

And, ironically, from the silence beyond that point, her own **“pure core of melody”** emerged once again.

After peeling away the surface, creating wounds, and moving further and further inward, what remained at the very end was the most primordial form of melody in music.

## From the Extreme Edge of Contemporary Music to Explosive Chaos

From the extreme edge of contemporary music — **the silence of Rebecca Saunders** — to the riotous low-end violence of South Africa — **the explosive sound of Die Antwoord**.

Welcome to **BALSE SONIC 2027**, the fictional festival that tears away the skin of the eardrum and drives chaos directly into the brain.

# BALSE SONIC 2027 — TIMETABLE & OPERATIONS —

### 19:00–20:00｜ACT 1: 【Deconstruction and Perforation】

**Artists:** Rebecca Saunders × Talea Ensemble

**Program:** *Skin*, *Scar*, *Skull*
*(Complete Triptych performed without interruption)*

**Acoustic Effect:** Fully notated music. All lights inside the dome are extinguished. Through the physical force of sound at the instant it is born, together with razor-sharp metallic noise, the audience’s mental epidermis is literally peeled away.

### 20:00–20:10｜SPECIAL INTERMISSION: 【The Abyss of BALSE】

**Staging:** Near the end of *Skull*, the “core of melody” rising from the bottom of silence reverberates throughout the dome.

Eventually the sound disappears, leaving behind nothing but a silent canvas.

And then—

**Acoustic Effect:** Ten minutes of **absolute silence**.

Only the ringing in the ears remains, taking control of the audience’s brains.

### 20:10–21:40｜ACT 2: 【Chaos and Riot】

**Artist:** Die Antwoord

**Program:** *ZAMA ZAMA #1*, *ZAMA ZAMA #2*, and other selections from their deranged setlist.

**Acoustic Effect:** The silence of the previous work is literally “smashed apart” by the deafening horns of the “ZEF TAXI” and an ultra-heavy sub-bass designed to destroy the brain.

NINJA and ¥O-LANDI tear across the stage, throwing the audience, which has been silent for ten minutes, straight into a vortex of mosh.

Saunders peeled away **“the skin”** and exposed **“the core behind the skull.”**

Then Die Antwoord threw a bomb called **ZEF** into that hollowed-out skull.

Will your ears die, or will your brain melt?
