ABOUT THIS SITE

Balse is an independent publication that started in 2015, re-launched in August 2026 by a team of collaborators from around the world.

The Premise

Balse is an inquiry into our past, today, and where we are going—a quest to define the ‘Next Human.’

It is a journey experienced through presence, observation, and listening. We first learn from our origins. Timeline—a living, reverse-chronological archive that revisited historical turning points, cultural shifts, and philosophical markers as I discover them. You are invited to experience this research as it unfolds in real time.

Our narrative follows チャールズ・バルス（Charles Balse）, an imaginary persona navigating the modern landscape in pursuit of the Next Human. Through the lens of contemporary art, electronic and classical & contemporary music, literature, history, and philosophy. We select the BALSE moments, which is what is reserved for the best of the best, classics. Look out for this filter, and seek with care. They are my highly recommended selected few materials over time.

Curated by Editor-in-Chief Yohei Abe, our work rests on a singular belief: Next Human is already within us. It is the realization of our innate humanity and its infinite possibilities.

The Form

Balse is a witness to a life—raw, personal, and evolving. It is an individual pursuit aiming for something global and universal; an education of the soul. The platform grows organically alongside our vision, expanding like a cultural neo-Pompidou. Until I die. Like Matisse. Cutting paper till the end.

Balse.org is an independent journal of slow observation, acoustic resonance, and visual silence.

We do not produce content for algorithms, feeds, or casual distraction. We exist outside the accelerated web—committed to the conviction that art, literature, and sound demand patience, critical rigor, and unhurried perception. We do not explain away mystery, nor do we dilute thought for consensus. We build for the discerning reader who seeks depth over volume, substance over novelty, and craft over commerce.

Etymology: What is 'Balse'?

The name Balse originates from the incantation of destruction and rebirth at the climax of Hayao Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky. It signifies the delicate balance between human technology and nature—a symbol of necessary destruction to clear the path for renewal and creation.
